How do I choose the right headcollar for my horse?

There are two decisions to make: style and size.

For style, we have two headcollar options. Our Comfort Fleece Head Collar has adjustment on one side of the headpiece and at the noseband — a straightforward, reliable everyday choice. Our Adjustable Fleece Head Collar has adjustment on both sides of the headpiece as well as the noseband, giving you more flexibility to get a precise, balanced fit — particularly useful for horses with broader or more unusual head shapes. Both are available alone or as a set with an extra-long 8.5ft lead rope, which gives you more control and flexibility when leading larger or stronger horses.

For size, our headcollars run from Cob through to Draft XXFull, so they cover everything from native ponies and lighter riding horses right through to Shires, Clydesdales, and other large draft breeds. When fitting, the headcollar should be snug but not tight — you should be able to slip two fingers between the strap and your horse's face. If it's sitting too low on the nose or pulling tight anywhere, adjust the buckles until the fit is even on both sides.

FAQs

What is the difference between the Comfort Fleece Head Collar and the Adjustable Fleece Head Collar?

Both are made from the same polypropylene webbing with soft fleece padding across the headpiece, noseband, and cheek pieces. The difference is in the adjustment. Our Comfort Fleece Head Collar adjusts on one side of the headpiece and at the noseband — simple and straightforward for everyday use. Our Adjustable Fleece Head Collar adjusts on both sides of the headpiece as well as the noseband, giving you more control over the fit and making it easier to get a balanced, even fit on horses with broader or more unusual head shapes. If you want maximum adjustability, go for the Adjustable version.

Do your headcollars fit heavy horses and draft breeds?

Yes — our headcollars are available in sizes from Cob to Draft XXFull, designed to fit everything from native ponies and lighter riding horses right through to Shires, Clydesdales, Percherons, Belgian Drafts, and other large draft breeds. Unlike many standard headcollars that run small or don't account for the broader, heavier head shape of draft breeds, ours are made with real horse measurements for a true fit and multiple adjustment points to get a secure, comfortable fit across a wide range of head shapes.

How should a headcollar fit?

A headcollar should be snug but not tight. You should be able to slip two fingers between the strap and your horse's face at any point — if you can't, it's too tight; if it's shifting around or sitting too low on the nose, it needs adjusting. The noseband should sit roughly two fingers' width below the cheekbone, and the headpiece should sit comfortably behind the ears without pulling. Our headcollars have multiple adjustment points so you can get the fit right across the headpiece and noseband independently.

Why choose a fleece headcollar over a standard nylon one?

Fleece headcollars are significantly more comfortable for everyday wear, particularly for horses that are sensitive around the poll, nose, or cheeks, or those prone to rubbing from standard nylon headcollars. The soft fleece padding reduces pressure and friction across all the contact points, making them a much kinder option for horses that wear a headcollar for extended periods — whether in the stable, travelling, or during handling. They're also just as durable as a standard nylon headcollar when made from quality polypropylene webbing, so you're not sacrificing strength for comfort.

Do the headcollars come with a lead rope?

Our headcollars are available either on their own or as a set with an extra-long 8.5ft lead rope. The longer length gives you more control and flexibility when leading larger or stronger horses — particularly useful for loading, leading in hand, or working with horses that need a bit more space. If you already have a lead rope you're happy with, the headcollar alone is a great option. If you're starting fresh or want a matched set, the headcollar and lead rope set is the better value choice.

How do I care for a fleece headcollar?

Remove any loose hair and dirt with a brush before washing. You can machine wash at 30°C with all fastenings secured, or hand wash if you prefer. Allow to dry naturally away from direct heat — don't tumble dry or leave in direct sunlight as this can affect the fleece and webbing over time. It's also worth checking the buckles, rings, and stitching regularly to make sure everything is in good condition, particularly if the headcollar is used daily.

Horse Head Collars

A headcollar that rubs or doesn't fit properly is a daily frustration — and for owners of larger, broader-headed horses, finding one that actually fits can be harder than it should be. Our Epic Equestrian fleece headcollars are designed to solve both problems.

Made from strong polypropylene webbing with luxuriously soft fleece padding across the headpiece, noseband, and cheek pieces, they're comfortable enough for extended wear and durable enough for everyday use. The fleece lining reduces pressure and friction across the poll, nose, and cheeks — making them particularly well suited to horses with sensitive skin or those prone to rubbing from standard headcollars.

All styles feature multiple adjustment points for a tailored fit across a wide range of head shapes, from fine-boned Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods through to broad-headed draft breeds. Available in sizes from Cob to Draft XXFull, with a quick-release throat clip for easy fastening and Epic embroidery on the noseband. Choose the headcollar alone, or as a set with an extra-long 8.5ft lead rope — particularly useful when leading larger or stronger horses where extra length gives you more control and flexibility.
