The Big Horse Shop was born out of frustration, passion, and a deep love for horses. Founded in 2009 by Jo, a lifelong heavy horse enthusiast, the brand started with one simple mission: to create horse rugs that actually fit. Tired of ill-fitting rugs that pinched, slipped, or restricted movement, Jo set out to design products that put comfort and correct fit above all else. What began as a solution for her own horses, Inca, a Traditional Gypsy Cob; Sam, a Shire X; and Paddy, a heavyweight Irish Draught, has grown into a pioneering equestrian brand trusted by horse owners around the world.

Jo’s journey began with the challenge all heavy horse owners know too well: finding rugs that fit deep chested, broad-shouldered, short-coupled horses with large hindquarters. Standard rugs were too tight across the chest and neck and far too short in the body. Watching her horses go without rugs each winter because nothing fitted correctly was the catalyst for The Big Horse Shop.

From those humble beginnings, the brand evolved. After welcoming Rubix, a lighter-medium build Warmblood, Jo realised there was a need for rugs designed for all horse builds, not just heavy horses. This insight led to the creation of our Regular Fit range, ensuring light, medium, medium+, and heavy horses could all enjoy rugs tailored to their unique shapes.

Today, The Big Horse Shop offers a full range of horsewear, accessories, and rider clothing designed with unique size charts, precise anatomical fits, and comfort-first design, revolutionising the equestrian rug market.

We are also committed to ethical business practices. Before partnering with manufacturers, we personally visit their facilities to ensure safe working conditions, fair wages, and ethical production standards. We value every person involved in creating our products, from our talented in-house designers to the skilled craftsmen who make them a reality.

Affordability is another core value. We strive to make high-quality, correctly fitting horsewear accessible to all budgets, because comfort should never be a luxury.

Our Epic Equestrian range now covers all horse builds, offering innovative rugs, boots, and accessories that are tailored to each horse’s body type. Following our customers’ requests, we also developed Epic Rider, a line of technical, size-inclusive equestrian clothing designed for modern riders who value comfort, performance, and style.
