It Started With Rugs That Didn’t Fit

Back in 2009, our founding director Jo couldn’t find rugs that fitted her horses properly. Standard rugs were tight across the chest, restrictive through the shoulders, too short in the body, and constantly slipped backwards.

Like many owners of cobs, draughts, and broader horses, she found herself leaving horses unrugged because nothing on the market actually worked.

That frustration became the foundation of The Big Horse Shop.

What began as a solution for her own horses, Inca, a Traditional Gypsy Cob; Sam, a Shire X; and Paddy, a heavyweight Irish Draught, has grown into a pioneering equestrian brand trusted by horse owners around the world.

The original heavy horsewear brand

2009

The Idea

The Big Horse Shop was founded after years of struggling to find rugs for broad, deep-chested horses.

2010

The First Broad Fit Collection

Our first rugs, boots, and accessories became available, designed specifically for broader horses and heavy breeds that were being overlooked by other manufacturers.

2012

The Original Heavy Horsewear Brand

As more owners struggled with the same fit problems, we became known for our heavy horse rugs, designed specifically for broader horses and draught breeds.

Horse owners around the world finally found rugs that allowed freedom of movement without tightness, rubbing, or pulling.

2016

More Than Heavy Horses

After welcoming Rubix, a lighter-medium build Warmblood, Jo realised there was a need for rugs designed for all horse builds, not just heavy horses.

2019

The Launch Of Regular Fit

Our Regular Fit collection was developed using the same fit-first philosophy, creating dedicated fit systems for different horse builds.

2020

The Only Heavy Horse Travel Boots

After years of struggling to find travel boots that properly fit heavy horses with feathered legs and thick cannon bones, we developed our own patent-protected design.

They're the first and only travel boots in the world specifically designed to fit heavy horses with an abundance of feather correctly, they provide proper protection and comfort without tightness, pressure, or restriction during travel.

Designed around movement, not standard sizing

Real Horse Measurements

Our rugs are designed using unique size charts developed around real horse anatomy, not generic sizing.

Full Freedom Of Movement

More room where it matters allows movement without tightness, rubbing, or pulling across the chest and shoulders.

Broad Fit & Regular Fit

Different horse builds need different shapes. That’s why we developed dedicated fit systems.

Proper Coverage

Correct rug depth and proportionate tail flaps provide proper coverage. NO MORE “MINI-SKIRTS”.

Every product starts with fit

We don’t design products around trends or generic sizing charts.

Every rug, mask, boot, liner, and accessory starts with how it sits on the horse, how it moves during use, and where pressure, rubbing, or restriction usually happens.

That practical, horse-first approach shapes everything we make.

Trusted horse owners worldwide

Our customers come to us because they’ve struggled with rugs that don’t fit properly. They stay because they trust that every product is designed with comfort, movement, and proper fit at its core.

Hooray a rug that fits my ID! Plenty of shoulder room, fantastic depth to hide his tummy, a long tail guard to keep the rain out and back legs well covered. He is warm inside with 0g! For a horse who loves to roll the rug never slips. Should have bought one years ago! Love the colour purple!!

I have been using the big horse shop for a number of years for rugs for differing horses. I find them invaluable for big shouldered animals. Even though my horses are not draft horses, they still take a big shouldered rug. The rugs provide of room and no rubbing. Happy horses.

Fabulous fly rug that fits my Irish Cob perfectly! Love how adjustable it is, you can really customise the fit both around the front and belly. Super high quality fabric too. Very impressed!
