When should I use a medium weight turnout rug?

A 200g turnout rug is one of the most popular winter rug weights and is often the first choice for clipped horses during colder weather.

We generally recommend a medium weight turnout rug for colder winter weather, periods of sub-zero temperatures, and clipped horses that require additional warmth. Many horses will comfortably wear a 200g turnout rug throughout much of the winter without needing a heavier weight.

Every horse is different. Age, breed, clipping, condition, shelter, and individual tolerance to cold should all be considered when choosing a rug weight.

Many of our turnout rugs can also be paired with detachable neck covers and compatible rug liners, allowing you to increase warmth and coverage when needed.

FAQs

What is a medium weight turnout rug?

A medium weight turnout rug contains 200g of insulation and is designed to provide reliable warmth during colder weather while still offering full waterproof protection.

Is a 200g turnout rug warm enough for winter?

For many horses, yes. A 200g turnout rug is often suitable throughout much of the winter, particularly when paired with a neck cover. Clipped horses, older horses, and those that feel the cold may benefit from additional layering depending on conditions.

What temperature is a 200g turnout rug suitable for?

There is no exact temperature guide as every horse is different. However, 200g turnout rugs are commonly used during colder winter weather and periods of sub-zero temperatures.

Should I use a neck cover with a 200g turnout rug?

Many horse owners choose to add a neck cover during winter to provide additional protection from rain, wind, and colder temperatures.

Can I use a rug liner with a 200g turnout rug?

Yes. Our Epic Classic turnout rugs are compatible with our rug liner system, allowing you to increase warmth without changing the outer rug.

How should a medium weight turnout rug fit?

A medium weight turnout rug should sit comfortably through the chest and shoulders without tightness, rubbing, or pulling. It should provide full coverage through the body and allow unrestricted freedom of movement whether your horse is grazing, moving around the field, or resting.

Medium Weight Turnout Rugs

Medium weight turnout rugs provide 200g of insulation and are designed for colder winter conditions when additional warmth is needed. They are commonly used for clipped horses, older horses, horses that feel the cold, and during periods of sub-zero temperatures.

For many horse owners, a 200g turnout rug becomes their go-to winter rug. It provides significantly more warmth than a lightweight turnout rug while remaining practical for everyday use throughout much of the winter.

Like every turnout rug we design, our medium weight turnout rugs are built around real horse measurements rather than generic sizing. Available in both Broad Fit and Regular Fit, they are designed to sit comfortably through the chest and shoulders, provide full coverage through the body, and allow unrestricted freedom of movement in the field.

Many styles can also be paired with detachable neck covers and compatible rug liners, allowing you to build a turnout system that adapts to changing weather while maintaining the same fit and comfort throughout the season.
