When should I use a lightweight turnout rug?

If your horse needs a little more warmth than a rain sheet provides, a lightweight turnout rug is usually the next step.

Available in 40g, 50g and 100g weights, they're ideal during spring, autumn and milder winter weather. They're also a popular choice for clipped horses, older horses and those that feel the cold more than others.

For many horses, we'd recommend choosing a 40g or 50g turnout rug over a no fill rug during transitional seasons. The small amount of filling creates a layer between the horse and the outer fabric, which can help reduce the appearance of condensation build-up inside the rug.

Some horses naturally run warmer than others and may only ever need a lightweight turnout rug, even during the depths of winter.

If you're unsure which weight is right for your horse, it's usually better to start lighter and increase warmth if needed rather than over-rugging.

FAQs

What is a lightweight turnout rug?

A lightweight turnout rug contains a small amount of insulation, typically between 40g and 100g, while still providing full waterproof protection. They're designed for horses that need more warmth than a rain sheet provides without moving into a heavier winter rug.

What is the difference between 40g, 50g and 100g turnout rugs?

40g and 50g turnout rugs provide a small increase in warmth over a no fill rug and are ideal for changing weather conditions. A 100g turnout rug offers additional insulation and is often used during cooler autumn weather and mild winter temperatures.

Is a lightweight turnout rug suitable for winter?

For some horses, yes. Horses that naturally run warm may comfortably wear a lightweight turnout rug throughout much of the winter. Clipped horses, older horses, and those that struggle to maintain condition may require additional warmth depending on the weather and their individual needs.

Should I use a neck cover with a lightweight turnout rug?

A neck cover can provide additional protection and warmth during wet, windy, or colder weather. Many horse owners choose to add a neck cover during autumn and winter to help keep the neck dry and reduce heat loss.

Can I use a rug liner with a lightweight turnout rug?

Yes. Our Epic Classic turnout rugs are compatible with our rug liner system, allowing you to increase warmth without changing the outer rug. This gives you greater flexibility as temperatures change throughout the season.

How should a lightweight turnout rug fit?

A lightweight turnout rug should sit comfortably through the chest and shoulders without tightness, rubbing, or pulling. It should provide full coverage through the body and allow unrestricted freedom of movement whether your horse is grazing, moving around the field, or resting.

Lightweight Turnout Rugs

Lightweight turnout rugs provide waterproof protection with a little extra warmth, making them ideal for changing temperatures throughout spring, autumn, and milder winter weather.

Available in 40g, 50g and 100g weights, they're a popular choice for horses that need more warmth than a rain sheet provides without moving into a heavier winter rug. For many horses, particularly during transitional seasons, a 40g or 50g turnout rug provides the ideal balance between protection and comfort.

Like every turnout rug we design, our lightweight turnout rugs are built around real horse measurements rather than generic sizing. Available in both Broad Fit and Regular Fit, they are designed to sit comfortably through the chest and shoulders, provide full coverage through the body, and allow unrestricted freedom of movement in the field.

Many styles can also be paired with detachable neck covers and compatible rug liners, allowing you to adapt warmth and coverage as conditions change while maintaining the same fit and comfort throughout the season.
