How do I choose the right neck cover for my horse?

The most important thing is to match your neck cover to your rug — both in fit and weight. Our neck covers are available in Regular Fit and Broad Fit, and they're designed to pair with the corresponding turnout or stable rug in the same fit. Always choose the same fit as your outer rug so the coverage is consistent from chest to tail.

For weight, the general rule is to match your neck cover to your rug weight — a 100g rug paired with a 100g neck cover gives you consistent warmth across the whole horse. That said, some owners choose to go slightly lighter on the neck cover, particularly for horses that are less sensitive to cold around the neck, or to give a bit of flexibility as temperatures change.

Our turnout neck covers are available in 0g, 40g, 50g, 100g, and 200g. The 0g is a great year-round option for keeping the neck dry without adding warmth. The 40g and 50g are ideal for transitional weather when you want a little extra protection without too much insulation. The 100g suits cooler weather and most of the British winter. And the 200g is best reserved for the coldest conditions or clipped horses that really feel the cold around the neck.

Not every horse needs a neck cover all the time — that's exactly why ours are detachable. Many owners add one during wet, windy, or cold spells and remove it when conditions improve.

FAQs

Do I need a neck cover for my horse?

Not every horse needs a neck cover all the time — but most horse owners find them invaluable once they've used one. A neck cover provides extra warmth and waterproof protection around one of the most exposed areas of your horse during turnout, and makes a real difference on wet, windy days. If your horse is clipped, older, or particularly sensitive to the cold, a neck cover is well worth adding to your rugging system. And because ours are detachable, you can add it when conditions call for it and remove it when they don't.

What weight neck cover does my horse need?

As a general rule, match your neck cover weight to your turnout rug — a 100g rug with a 100g neck cover gives consistent warmth across the whole horse. Our turnout neck covers are available in 0g, 40g, 50g, 100g, and 200g. The 0g keeps the neck dry without adding warmth — great year-round for horses that don't need extra insulation. The 40g and 50g suit transitional weather when you want a little extra protection. The 100g works well through cooler weather and most of the British winter. And the 200g is best saved for the coldest conditions or clipped horses that really feel the cold. Some owners choose to go slightly lighter on the neck cover than the rug, which gives a bit of flexibility as temperatures change — it's a personal choice based on your horse.

Do neck covers come in Regular Fit and Broad Fit?

Yes — our neck covers are available in both Regular Fit and Broad Fit to match your rug. It's important to choose the same fit as your outer rug so the coverage is consistent and the neck cover attaches correctly. Regular Fit neck covers are designed for light to medium builds — Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, Irish Sports Horses, and lighter Cobs. Broad Fit neck covers are designed for medium+ to heavy horses with a broader chest, thicker neck, long manes, and bigger shoulders — Shires, Belgian Draughts, New Forest ponies, Comtois, and more.

How does a neck cover attach to my rug?

Our neck covers attach to your turnout or stable rug using a secure attachment system at the withers, designed to stay in place when your horse grazes, rolls, or moves around. They're detachable, so you can add or remove them as conditions change without needing a different rug. Always pair a neck cover with the same fit of rug to ensure the attachment points line up correctly and the coverage is seamless from chest to tail.

Will a neck cover stay in place when my horse grazes?

Yes — and this is something we've thought about carefully in the design. Our neck covers are cut longer than most for two reasons. First, the overlap onto the rug is generous, which prevents any gap forming between the neck cover and the rug itself. Second, when a horse lowers their head to graze, their neck naturally extends a further 10–15cm compared to when they're standing. Most neck covers aren't long enough to account for this, which means the top of the neck cover pulls away from the base of the ears, leaving the upper neck exposed. Ours are cut to follow this natural extension, so your horse stays fully covered from ears to tail while they're grazing — no gaps, no exposed neck, just consistent protection throughout.

Can I use a neck cover with any of your rugs?

Our neck covers attach to your rug using double-locking velcro over the wither area — and the attachment points are consistent across all of our ranges and fits, so they'll line up correctly whichever rug you have. We recommend choosing the same fit as your outer rug — Regular Fit neck cover with a Regular Fit rug, Broad Fit with a Broad Fit rug — because a rug and neck cover designed for the same body shape will always be the most comfortable combination for your horse. That said, some horses have a broader chest but a less muscular neck, and in those cases a Regular Fit neck cover can work perfectly well on a Broad Fit rug. If you're unsure, get in touch and we'll help you find the right combination.

Rug Neck Covers

The neck is one of the most exposed parts of your horse during turnout — and one of the most overlooked when it comes to rugging. A well-fitting neck cover makes a real difference on wet, windy days, keeping your horse dry and warm from poll to tail without any gaps for rain or wind to get in.

Our Epic Equestrian neck covers are designed to work seamlessly with our turnout and stable rugs, attaching securely so they stay in place when your horse grazes, rolls, or moves around the field. They're available in Regular Fit and Broad Fit to match your rug, and in a range of weights — 0g, 40g, 50g, 100g, and 200g for turnout, and matching options for stable use — so you can choose the right level of warmth for the conditions.

One of the things our customers love most is the length. Our neck covers are cut longer than most, so they extend with your horse's natural neck extension as they graze — no gaps, no rain getting in at the join, just consistent coverage from head to tail.
